GNAT and NAGRAT Denounce Assault on Kade SHS Teacher
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has strongly condemned a reported assault on teachers by some WASSCE candidates in Kade, located in the Eastern Region.
According to GNAT, the incident occurred at night shortly after the release of the WASSCE results. The candidates are alleged to have blamed the teachers for their poor performance, accusing them of preventing them from engaging in examination malpractices.
In an interview with TV3, GNAT’s General Secretary, Thomas Tanko Musah, emphasized that the protection of teachers must be treated as a critical issue. He advised educators to immediately withdraw from any environment where they feel unsafe.
“Teachers must prioritize their lives. If you sense danger, you are permitted to leave after notifying the appropriate authorities. Labour laws support this, and we encourage our members to vacate their posts whenever their safety is at risk,” he said.
Musah also cautioned the presidential candidate of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Nabla, against making remarks he described as provocative toward teachers in the wake of the widespread WASSCE failures.
“Individuals like Janet Nabla should exercise restraint and stop directing blame at teachers. Continued attacks will compel us to respond. It is unacceptable to incite public anger against educators. If there is nothing helpful to contribute, such commentary should cease,” he warned.
Separately, the Eastern Regional branch of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) has demanded swift investigations and firm action against students of Kade Senior High School who are alleged to have assaulted a teacher outside the school compound.
The Eastern Regional Chairman of NAGRAT, Awoonor-Yevu Godwin, underscored the need for the law to be applied without compromise, stating that holding those responsible accountable would deter similar incidents in the future.
