I spend not less than GH¢30,000 on funerals every month as MP – Tiah Mahama

Kabiru Tiah Mahama, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Walewale Constituency, has opened up about the financial challenges faced by MPs in supporting their constituencies, despite receiving substantial allowances.

In an interview on GHOne TV on January 14, 2026, Mahama emphasized that sustaining personal savings while meeting constituency demands is a delicate balancing act.

He revealed that he has been saving consistently since 2000, but much of his savings are often redirected or kept in secure accounts for safety.

Highlighting the personal financial commitment involved in constituency work, Mahama said he spends between 20,000 and 30,000 Ghana cedis every month just to show solidarity with families during funerals and other community engagements.

He also pointed out that MPs often leverage corporate social responsibility programs of various organizations to support local projects, using their networks to attract additional resources for development.

“The most difficult thing is that your salary barely takes you to the end of the second week. In fact, the first week you have to finish it because in my constituency alone, there are funerals on the weekend, which is the manner in which an MP should go and show solidarity with their members.

“I spend not less than 20,000 to 30,000 every single month just to commiserate with families. And that is, that is where the difficulty is,” he added.

Despite the challenges, Mahama stressed that dedication and careful financial management allow MPs to meet both personal and constituency obligations.
