Government seeks support of private sector to tackle transport challenges

The Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has urged private transport operators to cooperate with government efforts in addressing the ongoing transport challenges, describing the situation as a national crisis requiring urgent attention.

Speaking at a stakeholder engagement to address the challenges on Friday, January 16, 2026, he cautioned against making excuses or shifting responsibility, emphasizing that collaboration is key to resolving the problem.

“Don’t let us be giving excuses, and don’t let us be shirking responsibilities and be shifting blame. That it is you, it is me. If we are doing this, there’s a problem,” he remarked.

Ahmed Ibrahim also stressed the importance of private sector participation.

He warned that if private transport operators fail to cooperate, the government may be compelled to expand the public transport fleet to meet demand, potentially affecting the role of private operators in the sector.

“It is not only the government’s responsibility; we need complementary efforts,” he added, urging all stakeholders to support government initiatives to ensure efficient and reliable transport services.

The stakeholder meeting comes amid increasing pressure on the government to address challenges in the transport sector and points out a need for collaboration between public and private stakeholders to improve Ghana’s public transport system.
