Fela Kuti Makes History at the Grammys 2026

This Grammy recognition is seen as not just an artistic honor but a symbolic acknowledgment of the global impact of African music and culture.

Why It Matters

Fela Kuti (1938–1997) is widely regarded as the architect of Afrobeat, blending jazz, funk, highlife, and traditional Yoruba rhythms into a genre that reshaped global music. His music was also deeply political criticizing corruption, oppression, and inequality in Nigeria and beyond.

The award was accepted on his behalf by his children  including Femi, Yeni, Kunle, and Shalewa Kuti  celebrating his musical legacy.

• The ceremony also honored other global music legends such as Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Cher, Paul Simon, and Carlos Santana.
