Egyptian lawyer sues Netflix for depicting Cleopatra as Black woman

Egyptian lawyer Mahmoud al-Semary, , has initiated legal action against Netflix. The lawyer has filed a case with the Public Prosecutor, calling for the streaming platform’s closure following the release of the trailer for the upcoming movie “Queen Cleopatra.”

The film’s portrayal of the Greek historical figure as a black-skinned woman has caused controversy and outrage in Egypt. The lawyer argues that this depiction is historically inaccurate and offensive to the Egyptian people. Egypt Independent reported that Mahmoud al-Semary demanded that all legal measures be taken against those responsible for the documentary and the management of the streaming platform for their participation in “this crime.”

The complaint alleged that Netflix’s content contradicts Islamic and societal values and principles, particularly Egyptian ones. The case also claimed that the documentary promotes Afrocentrism that distorts and obliterates the Egyptian identity.

The complaint implored the Public Prosecution to take necessary legal measures against the platform to preserve the Egyptian national and cultural identity. The lawyer demanded the cessation of broadcasts aimed at distorting and obliterating the Egyptian identity and films that falsify and distort Egyptian history.

The controversy surrounding the film has sparked a heated debate on social media, with some arguing that the portrayal of Cleopatra is historically accurate, while others maintain that it is a misrepresentation of Egyptian history.

Netflix has not yet commented on the legal action taken by the Egyptian lawyer or the controversy surrounding the film. It remains to be seen how the case will progress and what the outcome will be.

This is not the first time that Netflix has faced legal action or controversy over its content. The streaming platform has previously been criticized for its portrayal of different cultures and historical figures, and has faced legal challenges in various countries.

As the streaming industry continues to grow and expand, it is likely that we will see more legal challenges and controversies surrounding the content provided by these platforms. It is important for these platforms to be sensitive to cultural and historical issues and to ensure that their content is accurate and respectfully.
