Authorities have reported that there are no indications of foul play in the death of South Africa’s Ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa. However, the exact cause of his death remains unclear. French investigators are working in close coordination with South African officials as the investigation continues to unfold.
According to reports, Ambassador Mthethwa was found outside the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Paris on Tuesday. His 22nd-floor hotel room window had been forced open, but investigators found no evidence of a physical struggle. A message reportedly sent to his wife hinted at possible suicidal intent, though his family has firmly rejected that theory, calling for a thorough and transparent investigation.
To assist in the ongoing probe, a five-member team from South Africa’s police service has been sent to France. Authorities from both countries are determined to uncover the full circumstances surrounding his death.
President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that he will deliver the eulogy at Mthethwa’s funeral on Sunday, honoring his years of public service and dedication to the nation.
Mthethwa had been serving as South Africa’s ambassador to France since late 2023. Before his diplomatic appointment, he held several key cabinet positions, including Minister of Arts and Culture and Minister of Sports. His sudden passing has shocked many across South Africa and abroad, leaving a legacy of leadership and national service that will be remembered by colleagues, friends, and citizens alike.
